Truckee, named after a friendly Paiute Indian Chief who
helped guide the early settlers crossing through the Sierra
Mountains during the 1840’s and once home to the
second largest population of Chinese during the building
of the Transcontinental Railway (1868-1886). The late
1800’s brought high times and rough living when
saloons and brothels dominated the “Wild West town.
Quieter times followed until 1960 when the Olympics where
held in Squaw Valley 10 miles from Truckee. Although the
means of transportation have changed through the years,
Truckee is still a popular stop on the east-west route
whether traveling by train or car. This cute little western
town ( check out old commercial row) with a population
of about 13,000 is nestled in the Truckee River valley
amongst the pine forests.
With approximately 300 days of sun a year, Truckee is
a nature lovers paradise that offers year round activities
for all ages. During the summer months enjoy days fishing,
lounging shore side or on your boat at Lake Tahoe, Donner
Lake or one of the 3 reservoirs just a short drive away.
Besides fishing, The Truckee River is a great place
to take the whole family for a rafting experience. It’s
hard to believe water can be so clear and so blue. Hiking
trails abound and if you’re a mountain bike rider
the possibilities are endless. Yes, it does snow a lot
in Truckee but the sun is sure to follow. Average winter
temperatures are 10*- 55* (f) so bring the ski equipment
and sunscreen because there are over 10 downhill and
cross-country ski areas from Lake Tahoe to Truckee.
Looking for something more cultural? Catch the moon
over Lake Tahoe while enjoying an evening performance
of the Shakespearian Festival or a classical concert
with the Lake Tahoe Summer Music Festival. The Concours
d’elegance is a gathering of antique wooden boats
and their fans in Carnelian Bay. Feeling lucky? Try
the casinos in Stateline or spend an evening in Reno
just 35 minutes from Truckee.
Although Truckee has grown through the years it is still
a small town. A small town that offers activities and
amenities for the first or second homeowner and opportunities
for the businessman or entrepreneur. |
